High School Students (Juniors and Seniors)

  If you are a high school student and would like to take a course at New River,     following requirements and procedures must be met each semester in which you   enroll:

• Be a junior or senior
• Have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher  
• A Current High School Transcript 
• Contact the School Office (Miss Ann) 
• Miss Ann can provide you a transcript with NLCA seal on it
• Contact me and I can email a transcript to admissions@newriver.edu
• Submit an application  Current High School Student Application
• Submit the High School Registration and Permission Form
• If you are currently a high school student, you are not eligible for financial aid.

VERY IMPORTANT

If you take any English and/or Math courses that the course number is BELOW 100

They are remedial courses only – they are NOT DUAL CREDIT COURSES

They CANNOT be transfer back to New Life – and count toward Graduation

TO BE ELIGIBLE

To be eligible to enroll in college classes at New River CTC as a high school student, you must meet the following requirements:

• Must be a junior or senior. (Sophomores may be eligible if participating in the Grow Your Own (GYO) Pathway through their high school. Your high school will provide guidance if you are in a GYO pathway).
• Have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher. Your school may require a higher GPA.
• Complete the online  each semester you will attend.
• Next, complete the course registration form each semester you will attend. If you are home-schooled, your parent or the person overseeing your educational instruction will sign as the Principal.

• ACT or SAT scores if you plan to enroll in math, English, and other courses with prerequisites. Course and prerequisite information can be found in the college catalog under Course Descriptions. Scroll down to view placement test score requirements.

OR

In lieu of ACT or SAT scores, a student who has successfully completed 2 years of math and English with a C or better and has a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher may be eligible. Your high school must submit an unofficial transcript directly to New River CTC’s Office of Admissions, admissions@newriver.edu, by fax, (304) 929-6719 or you may order through their electronic service to be sent to New River CTC.

OR

Accuplacer placement testing through New River CTC if a student does not meet any of the criteria listed above. Dual credit student testing will be arranged through your high school on site. Early enrollment students may schedule to take an Accuplacer if needed. Contact your Student Success Coach.

Placement tests (if necessary) must be taken prior to the start of class and before registration

PLACEMENT TEST SCORE REQUIREMENTS

Math 101

• ACT math score of 19 or above
• SAT score of 510 or above
• Accuplacer Next Generation Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra and Statistics score of 250 or above

Math 109

• ACT math score of 21 or above
• SAT score of 530 or above
• Accuplacer Next Generation Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra and
• Statistics score of 260 or above

English 101

• ACT reading score of 17 or above and Writing score of 18 or above
• SAT Evidence Based reading and Writing (ERBW) score of 480 or above
• Accuplacer Next Generation Writing score of 250 or above and Reading score of 252 or above

Students not meeting test scores or alternative testing requirements can be placed into English 101E or Math 101E (enhanced courses) with principal, and parent/guardian permission.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

If you plan to apply to New River CTC and attend after graduation, you will apply to the college as a first–time freshman and list any colleges (excluding New River CTC) where you have taken college classes. Your high school graduation date must be before the start of the semester in which you will apply as a first-time freshman.

           Contact your campus Student Success Center Summersville Campus              to make arrangements to take the Accuplacer test.

Navigating the Interactive Course Schedule

1. To access the Interactive Course Schedule you must log in as a Guest (no password is required).
2. Click “Find” to begin your search.
3. You’ll be able to choose the variables, or search terms, for your search. Click any of the drop-down buttons to choose your search criteria.
4. You don’t need to make selections for every field choose only one field for the most basic search.
5. Click search after you choose your criteria.

The following explains the Instructional Modalities used at NRCTC to describe how course information is delivered to students.

On the course schedule, the Instructional Modalities appear in a column labeled IM.

TRAD (Traditional Face-to-Face) — More than 75% of the course information is delivered in a scheduled classroom but up to 24% of the course information may be delivered online, typically using Blackboard Learn.

ETRAD (Enhanced Traditional) — More than 50% of the course information is delivered in a classroom, but a significant portion of the course information may be delivered online (25-49%).

WTRAD (Web Traditional) — Less than 50% of the course information is delivered in a classroom but the majority is delivered online (50-74%).

WEBP (Web Proctored) — Less than 25% of the instruction and/or proctoring might require the student to travel to a designated testing location or classroom, but the majority is delivered online (75-99%).

WEB and WEBDL (Web) — All course information (100%) is delivered online. WEBDL courses are contracted with agencies outside New River while New River instructors teach WEB courses using Blackboard Learn. There is no classroom requirement, but students must have access to a computer to participate.

IVN (Interactive Video) – More than 75% of the course information is delivered from an IVN classroom where the instructor is located to remote IVN classrooms at other New River campuses in real time and students must travel to one of the designated classrooms to receive the video-based instruction, but up to 24% of the course information may be delivered online.

IVNE (Interactive Video Enhanced) — More than 50% of the course information is delivered from an IVN classroom where the instructor is located to remote IVN classrooms at other New River campuses in real time and students must travel to one of the designated classrooms to receive the video-based instruction, but 25-49% of the course information may be delivered online.

IVNH (Interactive Video Hybrid) — Less than 50% of the course information is delivered from an IVN classroom where the instructor is located to remote IVN classrooms at other New River campuses in real time and students must travel to one of the designated classrooms to receive the video-based instruction, but the majority (50-74%) of the course information is delivered online.

IVNW (Interactive Video Web) — Less than 25% of the course information is delivered from an IVN classroom where the instructor is located to remote IVN classrooms in real time and students must travel to one of the designated classrooms to receive the video-based instruction or proctoring, but 75- 99% of the course information is delivered online.

ZOOM (Zoom) — All course information (100%) is delivered using Zoom (an interactive videoconferencing solution) and Blackboard Learn. Students connect from home or a location of their choice and must have access to a computer with webcam to participate. There is no classroom requirement.

FAFSA Information

FAFSA  is FREE by going to www.studentaid.gov starting Fall 2025.  Five easy steps

1. Create your FSA ID and password at www.studentaid.gov to allow you to sign your FAFSA electronically.  Keep track of your ID and password as you will use it each year to sign your FAFSA.  Your parents will need a FSA ID and password as well using a different email address.

2.  Make sure you have your social security number (and your parent's), driver's license number (if applicable) Alien Registration number  if you're not a US citizen, and federal tax information, including your W-2.  

3.  Use the optional "FAFSA on the Web"  Worksheet to gather all the necessary information for filing your FAFSA.  You can download it at www.studentaid.gov

4. Complete the FAFSA, there are helpful links on each page.  Make sure you indicate your preference to forward your information to the College of your choice include their school code.  Submit the application and hang on to your confirmation number.

5. Follow up on your FAFSA.  If you don't hear anything within 3 weeks, go to the website and select. "Check the Status of a Submitted FAFSA."  You will receive an e-mail with a link to your "FAFSA Submission Summary."
